Inside “The Sanctuary”: Designing Calm Spaces for Deep Work

Some work needs quiet. The Sanctuary at Workshop. was designed to protect it, through lighting, layout and etiquette that reduces noise and distraction.

Design details that matter

  • Calm lighting & textures reduce visual noise and eye strain.
  • Thoughtful layout- separates deep‑work zones from collaboration areas.
  • Acoustic considerations- keep the room hushed without feeling closed‑off

How to use the space

  • Bring a short list of high‑value tasks and time‑box them.
  • Save calls for private booths or other areas to keep the room quiet.
  • Batch email and admin for later, protect your cognitive prime.

Etiquette (so everyone wins)

  • Headphones on, voices low, phones on silent.
  • Take calls in booths; use meeting rooms for anything longer than a quick update.
  • You’ll leave with the kind of progress that’s hard to make anywhere else.
